Miss Haidee Clothing – Tasmania
Please tell us a little bit about your business
I started focusing on children’s clothing while pregnant with my first child Millie; I had previously done adults clothing and dabbled in kids wear. I had my first collection a dozen vintage dresses and set off with four shops in mind, first shop Tiny People in Byron Bay took the lot and everything I made for the next two years. They even got one of my dresses with Millie in it published In Australian Vogue, a massive highlight.
I have stuck to the same design with my vintage dress for the last 8 years, every summer I offer a full range to accompany my vintage, this is not all was made from vintage fabrics but is inspired by vintage fabrics and patterns.
Castle Design have been heavily involved enabling my business to grow and develop websites and brochures, post cards, tags all my media.
Where you nervous/reluctant to start?
Yes, rejection is pretty bad to deal with. When you are making something by hand and are attached to the item, having shops pick faults is really confronting.
Luckily it has all gone well. I only want shops that want my designs so I don’t push at all. They think they have found treasure when they come across your label and I am like I’ve been here for 8 years!!
it’s all been very positive. Having people to make you look good add the professional edge like Castle Design helps you feel positive and in control.
What gave you the confidence to do it?
I knew my ideas would work I just did not have the confidence to build a brand around the ideas, Luckily that came with time.
Surrounding myself with people who had the skills I did not and receiving a lot of positive feedback and lots of fantastic free media attention.
If you work from home, how do you make it work? i.e. roster? Work at night when kids are asleep?
I do work from home whenever I can, I have a great studio meters from my house, I can hear every “Muuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmm”
There is no roster, I am a mum first. I thought with my kids both at school this year I would have more time and its the opposite.
Do you use Facebook?
Yes face book is a must, it’s your data base its your message board. I can show new designs, giveaways, facebook only specials and you know they want to be there so your not being pushy or annoying .. am I ???
If you could give someone who is about to start their own business any advice what would it be?
Think of it as one step up from a hobbie and see were it takes you.
You do not want to fly high too soon and find out its not for your or the market is actually flooded with that item.
Have a website! A shop front is fantastic and I have had one and I loved it but there are just too many overheads and you have to be there all the time not concentrating on your product.
